A new and "magical" 2D platformer titled Enchanted Portals has come under fire for its close resemblance to Cuphead. The Switch and PC project hasn't even made it to Kickstarter yet, but already the promotional trailer is causing quite a stir online. it experienced a lot of negativity after the original tweet went viral:
We were prepared for some backlash, but the trailer definitely reached way more people than we could ever anticipate, and all the hate and negativity coming our way has definitely had a huge impact on us.
Viewers have accused it of being a "bootleg version" of Cuphead, a "clone" and a complete "ripoff" of the popular run and gun game, while others have said the developers behind it should expect "legal troubles" and asked the team to at least admit the game was "inspired by" StudioMDHR's title.
Xixo has confirmed Cuphead was a key source of inspiration and noted how it had a lot of "respect and admiration" for Studio MDHR's game:
Yes, of course Cuphead was a huge inspiration for Enchanted Portals. We’re both avid fans and we wanted to make something similar, but always from a place of respect and admiration for the original.
The two-person team is now trying to focus more on those supporting Enchanted Portals:
we’re trying to turn our attention more towards all those who are supporting us and sending their love for the game.
